Cups
Tournament
| To my the best of my understanding this was
a global first;
the Solstice Cups tournament is
going into its 5th year - last year's winners were
Pete Jamison and Anita.
Everyone at Solstice is encouraged to participate in the Cups
Tournament - last
year 80 teams of two competed for the Coveted Cups.
This tournament
within a tournament takes place after dinner outside
the clubhouse where
dinner is served. Speak to Derek Sigurdson on Saturday or
ask around at dinner for the exact details on the whens and
wheres. Click here for the rules of the
game. Click here for Solstice Cups Tournament
Page of Fame.

Party
Solstice is 5 year's
old, so let's party! DJ's Scace and Worm have frequented the party
scenes in Toronto and Halifax since 1998. You'll find them commanding
the vibes on Saturday night this year at Solstice. So, whether you
live in Toronto or are attending Solstice from out of town, take
advantage of the free-on-site camping, bring a tent shake it down
late night.
Fletcher's has an enormous
liscenced patio to eat dinner and enjoy some beverages. If the weather
turns sour go inside where the party will be raging on long past
sunset. So, eat, drink, make merry and party into the wee hours
of the AM. As always, taxi chits will be provided for any attendees
who have had a few drinks and need to get home. But why even bother
going home; stay with us and just get up and play in the morning.

Dinner
| I am happy to announce that last year's caterer,
Memphis
Hospitality Services, has agreed to prepare the food for
Solstice again this year. Due to the overwhelming praise of
dinner the previous three years, we will have a very similar
menu again this year. As a result, captains, I need to know
how many vegetarians there are on your respective teams and,
in an effort to budget as accurately as possible, before June
13th, 2002, I need to know how many players will be attending.
Like last year there will be NO plates or cutlery provided
by me!!!! The idea is that we, collectively, are environmentally
friendly. By providing your own plates and cutlery, the collective
"we" can cut down on the amount of waste accumulated
by the mass feeding. Two years ago I noticed one team who
got their act together...and bought disposable plates!!!!
Not cool, not good, not acceptable!!!! Captains, it is up
to you to make sure your team mates are informed and know
to bring their own plates/discs/tupperware and cutlery. Last
year, I was proud of how little waste that meal for 560 produced
(less than two full garbage bags). Let's improve on that.
With regards to cleaning your plates and cutlery, wash bins
and water will be provided so you do not have to lug around
messy plates and knives and forks.
Dinner will be served in the same manner as last year, buffet
style. Tables, chairs, beer (@ ~$3 a cup) and tunes will be
provided, like last year.

Cups/Fricket
Rules
Cups is quite simple and has few rules.
Equipment
1 disc
4 bamboo gardening stakes (and plenty of replacements, available
at most hardware stores in groups of 20. 3' stakes are good, 4'
are better.)
4 beer cups (and plenty of replacements)
Setup
Stick 2 stakes in ground so that a disc may pass between them with
an inch
or so clearance on either side. The other 2 stakes go in the ground
10-20
paces away, depending on the skill level of the throwers (try 15
and adjust
accordingly). Cups are placed upside-down on the tops of the stakes.
Play
Teams of 2 take turns on offence, throwing the disc at the oppositions'
stakes & cups. This is an exercise in accuracy, NOT POWER!!!
A speed
limit based on the safety of the players should be imposed, as the
disc is
not the focus of the defence.
Scoring
Offence scores 1 point for each cup that they knock to the ground.
Defence scores 1 point for a one-handed catch of a dislodged cup.
No points are scored on a dislodged cup caught with two hands, or
trapped.
Bobbling is permitted.
Offence scores 3 points if the disc passes between the stakes without
touching either stake.
Offence scores 2 points if the disc passes between the stakes without
touching either stake, if the disc touches the ground first (i.e.
the
'roller').
Winning
Games can be played to any score, switch sides when one team has
more than
half of the total.
It remains to be seen which distances, game winning scores, etc,
will be used for the tournament at Solstice. Tentatively, the early
rounds will be time capped and distances shorter to ensure we get
through the 6 or 7 rounds required for 200+ entrants.
